In February 2013 my work as a mathematician took me to São Paulo, Brazil. It was my first time to visit that huge city, and of course I wanted to bring back some photos. Curiously, several people stopped me in the streets and advised me not to keep my camera in plain view. Apparently there is a real possibility to get robbed. So I did my best to hide the camera most of the time. Fortunately, there were no problems and I am happy to report here a few visual impressions of the amazing city the locals call "Sampa."
I just love the fantastic design of this phone booth! The red building in the background is São Paulo Museum of Art, featuring a huge open space with no supporting structures inside. The art collection is small but very enjoyable; I strongly recommend visiting the museum if you are in the city!
Here is a view from under the museum. Note the man nonchalantly sleeping on the ground.
There are lots of people living in the streets in this city of vast differences in wealth.
I wonder what the guy in the window is doing. Perhaps it's his hobby to observe traffic.
